D. Martin “Marty” Phillips is managing
director and principal of EnCap Investments. EnCap
Investments is a funds management and investment
banking firm that provides private equity to independent
oil and gas companies and currently manages capital
on behalf of fifty institutions in the United
States and Europe.
Phillips is a Baton Rouge native. He joined RepublicBank
Dallas in 1978 and served as vice president and
manager of the energy loan production office in
Denver. He then became senior vice president and
division manager of the Houston office. RepublicBank
Dallas became NCNB Texas National Bank, and Phillips
became senior vice president of the energy banking
group in Dallas. He left NCNB Texas National Bank
to join EnCap in 1989.
Phillips earned a Bachelor of Science in business
administration in 1975 and an MBA in 1977 from
LSU. He was a defensive lineman for the LSU Tiger
football team from 1971-75, led by the late Coach
Charlie McClendon. He also attended the Stonier
Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.
Phillips is a member of the Independent Petroleum
Association of America and serves on the board
of Plains Resources Corporation. He is also on
the board of Small Steps Nurturing Center, an
early childhood education program for economically
at-risk youth in Houston’s First Ward. He
established the Donald Lindley and Ruby Wright
Phillips Developing Scholar Professorship at LSU
in honor of his parents. Phillips was inducted
into the Ourso College Hall of Distinction in
2002, the highest honor given to Ourso College
alumni.
