Joseph L. Herring is president and chief operating
officer for Covance, one of the world’s
largest and most comprehensive drug development
services companies. Herring has operating responsibility
for all of Covance’s business units worldwide,
including Early Development, Clinical Development,
Central Labs, and Commercialization Services.
Herring earned his bachelor of science in business
administration from LSU in 1978. Herring had
an 18 year career with American Hospital Supply/Baxter/Caremark,
where he served as vice president /general manager
of the oncology services division, area vice
president, and vice president of marketing. He
joined Covance in 1996. Herring held both the
senior vice president and president positions
in the Early Development Services unit, and was
instrumental in turning that unit into one of
Covance’s top financial performers. He
was named president and chief operating officer
in 2001, and in 2004 was elected to Covance’s
board of directors.
In addition to serving on Covance’s board
of directors, Herring also serves on the board
of directors for First Circle Medical in Minneapolis,
a drug development company working on proprietary
technology to treat Hepatitis C.
