Joseph H. “Jay” Campbell, Jr. is
president and chief executive officer of Associated
Grocers, a 53 year old retailer owned corporation
that services more than 250 independent grocers
in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Alabama.
Associated Grocers provides retail accounting,
advertising, equipment sales, marketing, retail
technology, and promotional merchandising services
and support that independent grocers utilize to
remain competitive and customer focused in the
retail grocery marketplace.
Campbell joined Associated Grocers in 1972 as
a part-time bookkeeper while pursuing a bachelor’s
degree from LSU. He assumed the position of internal
auditor and in-house legal counsel after obtaining
his law degree in 1976. Campbell served as treasurer,
controller, chief financial officer, chief operating
officer, and vice-president of Associated Grocers
before being named president and chief executive
officer in 1995.
Campbell is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting
in 1973 and a Juris Doctor in 1976 from LSU. He
serves on the boards of directors of the National
Grocers Association, Shurfine International, Capital
Area United Way, Pennington Biomedical Research
Foundation, the Louisiana Association of Business
and Industry, and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.
Campbell remains active in the legal community
as a member of the Baton Rouge and Louisiana State
Bar Associations and serves as associate director
of Louisiana Boys State, the program that first
brought him to LSU in 1968. In 2000, Campbell
earned the highest honor given by the Ourso College
of Business Administration when he was inducted
into the Hall of Distinction.
