October 24, 2003

Eduardo Aguirre Jr., Director of the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services Department of Homeland Security in Baton Rouge, will be the second speaker of the fall semester in LSU's Flores Master of Business Administration Distinguished Speaker Series. Aguirre will speak on Oct. 24, at 10 a.m., in the Lod Cook Alumni Center on LSU's campus.

Eduardo Aguirre, Jr. was sworn in as the first director of Citizenship and Immigration Services, a key leadership position in the Department of Homeland Security, on August 15, 2003. It is his second presidential appointment to a full-time position in the Federal government. Named “one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the nation” by Hispanic Business Magazine, Mr. Aguirre has traveled extensively in Latin America, Europe and Asia, promoting economic growth and international trade as a banker and representative of the U.S. government.

Aguirre joined the Department of Homeland Security from the Export-Import Bank, where he was vice chairman and chief operating officer. He served as acting chairman from December 2001 to December 2002. Prior to joining the Export-Import Bank, he was President of International Private Banking for Bank of America, where he had worked for 24 years. Aguirre was appointed by then-Governor Bush to the Board of Regents of the University of Houston System for a six-year term, serving from 1996-1998 as chairman. President George H. W. Bush appointed him to the National Commission for Employment Policy, and the Supreme Court of Texas appointed him to the State Bar as a non-attorney director.

Mr. Aguirre holds a bachelor of science degree from the College of Business Administration at Louisiana State University. He is a graduate of the American Bankers Association’s National Commercial Lending Graduate School, and has been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Houston and the Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago in the Dominican Republic. His deep commitment to community service is reflected by his involvement in numerous boards and associations, including the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Texas Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Bankers Association for Finance and Trade, and the Houston chapters of the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
