Jim Hackett serves as chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of Ocean Energy, Inc. Ocean Energy, Inc. is one of the ten largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in the United States. The company is headquartered in Houston and employs more than 1,100 people worldwide. Besides extensive North American operations, Ocean Energy, Inc. holds a leading position in West Africa and has a substantial presence in Egypt, the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, Indonesia and Pakistan.

Jim Hackett was elected president and CEO of Ocean Energy, Inc. upon its merger with Seagull Energy Corporation in March 1999, and assumed the additional duties of chairman in January 2000. He previously served as chairman, CEO and president of Seagull Energy Corporation. He joined Seagull from Duke Energy, where he led its Energy Services Division as president. He was executive vice president of Pan Energy when the company was merged with Duke Power to create Duke Energy. He also served as president of the gathering and processing division of Dynegy, Inc. His energy experience includes positions in engineering, finance and marketing with Burlington Resources and Amoco Oil Company.

Hackett received a MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS with high honors from the University of Illinois. He completed additional engineering studies at MIT, Boston University and the University of Houston MS Petroleum Engineering Program. He is a director of New Jersey Resources, Kaiser Aluminum Corporation, Temple-Inland, Inc. and Fluor Corporation. He is vice chair of the Domestic Petroleum Council and a member of the Policy Committee of the American Petroleum Institute and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He is chairman of Junior Achievement Southeast Texas, Inc., and a member of the board of the Hospice at the Texas Medical Center and the Executive Committee of the Houston Grand Opera.
