"Mentor/mentee relationships have proven instrumental in my
personal and professional growth throughout life. A strong
mentoring relationship, such as the one I developed during
a recent work experience, provides valuable guidance during
transitional periods and assists in building the confidence
needed to engage in new experiences."

"As a swim coach, I was a mentor to many of my swimmers. This
experience gave me the opportunity to gain invaluable skills
such as team management and leadership. Not only was I able
to motivate them to improve as swimmers, but more importantly
I had the chance to act as a role model. They looked up to
me for guidance and advice, which gave me immense satisfaction."

"One point about succeeding in corporate America
is the ability to engage or become a mentor. When
I joined IBM I was assigned a mentor. This mentor
program was intended to supplement the formal
training I was provided and it was one of the
reasons why I was able to learn what was expected
from me and to succeed in my job. My mentor helped
me out in many areas but he also challenged me
to learn certain aspects on my own through his
guidance. After three years at that job, I myself
became a mentor. It was a very good experience
for me and it was gratifying to see a person I
mentored succeed. My advice to current MBAs is
to take the MBA mentor program very seriously.
As a mentor, become very active with your mentee
and provide guidance, but also challenge them
whenever possible. As a mentee, it is imperative
to go to your mentor anytime you have a question
and need help. This would also include questions
about becoming a mentor the following year. This
will help prepare you for how your future manager
will challenge you in the corporate world."
